A 27-year-old medical student in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari was found dead in her hostel room on Friday, the police said on Sunday.
The student, who was in her second year of postgraduate studies at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), died by suicide. The police recovered a suicide note in her room, which has gone viral on social media.
In her suicide note, she named her professors and seniors, accusing them of "sexual harassment", "senior toxicity", "mental abuse", adding, "Sorry Appa, I love you the most."
Another line, written in green marker, said: "Depressed people can also be seen happy. Be kind. Don't judge. Be there for them."
The police have registered a case and are currently questioning the people named in the note for the second consecutive day.The case has drawn attention from former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) M Ravi IPS, who shared the suicide note on microblogging website X (formerly Twitter).
"The alleged suicide note of the girl. It should be investigated and facts be brought in. Steps have to be taken to prevent such alleged harassment," Ravi said on X.
Taking to X, National award-winning singer Chinmayi also advocated for a comprehensive investigation and highlighted the often unreported sexual harassment faced by female medical students during their studies and internships.
